Text Box: Welcome the New Year at
Historic Michie Tavern! January 24 11:30 a.m.

In January, the Newcomers Club will step back in time at Michie Tavern, a Virginia Historic Landmark. This popular Charlottesville site serves as the club’s traditional January gathering spot offering a cozy setting with a welcoming fireplace, hearty fare and 18th Century ambiance. Social time begins at 11:30 a.m., and lunch follows at noon.

Established in 1784 by Scotsman William Michie, the tavern served as the social center for its community and accommodated travelers with food, drink and lodging. In 1927, Michie Tavern was moved 17 miles to its present location close to Monticello. Today visitors experience the tavern’s past through a historical journey which recreates 18th Century tavern life. Servers in period attire offer bountiful midday fare in a rustic restaurant setting. Newcomers and their guests will enjoy a casual buffet in the Tavern Ordinary consisting of southern fried chicken, homemade mashed potatoes and gravy, black-eyed peas, stewed tomatoes, cole slaw, green beans, baby beets, cornbread and biscuits, and a fruit cobbler dessert. Hot and cold beverages also will be served.

The day’s featured speaker will be Russell Hubert, a Fluvanna County native and lead craftsperson at Ash Lawn-Highland, home of President James Monroe. Mr. Hubert specializes in spinning with a drop spindle using wool from sheep at Ash Lawn. After the spring shearing, he washes, cards and combs the wool before spinning. Dressed in period costume for this Newcomers Club luncheon, he will demonstrate these processes using techniques of the early 1800s. Mr. Hubert’s second specialty is paper quilling. His filigree work has been displayed in both the Virginia Governor’s Mansion and the White House. Mr. Hubert will demonstrate the art of quilling and show samples of his exquisite work.

After this leisurely lunch and speaker, enjoy four unique shops—all housed in distinct historic structures on the property. The Tavern-Museum Shop, Metal Smith Shop, Clothier and General Store provide assorted browsing and buying opportunities. Self-guided tours of the historic site are also available for a tour fee. (See www.michietavern.com for details.)

The luncheon menu will feature delectable colonial fare. Cost of the luncheon is $23 per person. Reservation checks must be received by January 17. Contact us for details.

Annual February Coffee
Featuring a Book Exchange—

Church of Our Saviour                               February 28        10 a.m.—12 noon

1165 East Rio Road

Shake off the winter doldrums by meeting old and new friends at the Annual February Coffee presented by your Newcomers Club.  Enjoy wonderful homemade goodies along with coffee and tea.

This year’s event will again feature a Book Exchange—“
Bring only 2 Books…Take only 2 Books.”

Select any two books from your library that you believe will interest another Newcomers Club member—fiction, nonfiction, cookbook, craft book, hardback or paperback.  During the coffee, peruse the myriad of titles brought by other Newcomers Club members and select two books that interest you.  Take the books home, put up your feet, and enjoy reading them on a wintery day!

Considering the camaraderie, delicious refreshments and Book Exchange, why not take this opportunity to introduce a new neighbor or friend to the Newcomers Club by bringing her or him with you to this coffee.

If you feel able to participate, also please bring one or more nonperishable food items, which will be given to the food pantry at the Church of Our Saviour.  This day’s 50/50 Raffle will benefit Shelter for Help in Emergency.
